Dear Parents,

Your child is participating in the second year of a new Chemistry Course, Regents Extended Chemistry.  Mrs. Wood and I have identified specific expectations, objectives and ideas in an effort for your child to have a positive and successful experience.  The ultimate objective is for your child to pass the Regents Chemistry exam in June 2006.

As part of the learning process, support by parents is important in the student’s success.  Chemistry is a difficult topic for most students, so it is important that your child be committed to studying and to completing assignments and labs consistently. Mrs. Wood and I are available to communicate your concerns and questions during the school year to assist your child.  Early intervention by parents and teachers is often a measure of final success.

The following are some of our expectations:

·        Homework and note taking - students are expected to:

o       Attempt to complete all parts of the homework assignments daily.

o       Take notes in class.

o       Review their notes before the next class. (Review of notes is part of the homework assignment. This reinforces the learning experience and ability to learn and do well on quizzes and tests.)

·        Students should bring a three (3) ring binder to class each day.  It should include 5 dividers and loose leaf paper.

·        A scientific calculator should also be brought to each class.

·        New York State requires a student to complete and write up twenty lab assignments in order to sit for the regents. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that your child completes and hands in all of his/her labs

As an attachment to this letter we have included a handout that spells out our policies and procedures that are to be followed in the class.  Although it is quite detailed, we feel it provides clear structure for your child to learn.

If you have any questions or concerns about the class or wish to make us aware of any special learning needs of your child, please contact Mrs. Wood or me.

Sincerely,

Karen Tutnauer                                    Paula Wood
