Classroom Policies and Procedures

Introduction

The following are expectations, rules and procedures to improve your ability to more easily learn from the classroom experience.  Although some items may seem trivial or that are normally understood, a written document will help you progress in your understanding of Chemistry and in your ability to succeed in class.

Class room rules

  1. Be respectful to others.
  2. Cell phones and electronic devices are not allowed.
  3. Throwing papers in the class room is not permitted.
  4. Raise your hand if you wish to speak.
  5. Only one person may speak at a time.

Assignments and Class Work

  1. Class work – you are expected to do all assigned class work!
  2. Weekly assignments will be handed out on Monday and will be posted on eChalk.
  3. What to do when you are absent – get the notes from a classmate and the handouts from me. This is not to be done during “teaching time”.
  4. Missed test or Quiz – make an appointment to make up the test within one week after returning to school
  5. Lab reports are to be handed in on the assigned date. There will be a 10 point deduction for each day late.

Class room Procedures

  1. Seating is in alphabetical order unless there is a special need. You are expected to sit in your assigned seats.
  2. If you are late for class you must have a pass.
  3. Upon entering the classroom, pick up a DO NOW assignment, sit down and start working. TIME LIMIT 3 - 5 MINUTES. Do not wait for the bell to ring to start working!
  4. Questions – raise your hand to speak and be quiet when others speak.
  5. When I want the attention of the class I will say OK everyone look up here.
  6. Double periods – I will call the break.  The bell is not the signal for the break. The break is 3 minutes only. Entering the lab bench area is not permitted during breaks.
  7. Dismissal - stay in your seat until the bell rings. No talking at the end of the class. Students do not end the class; I will end the class.
  8. Enter and leave the classroom through the front door only!
  9. Bathroom – raise your hand and pick up the pass. You must sign out the time you leave and the time you return. Only one person may leave the room at a time.
  10. Nurse - get a pass and sign out.
  11. Trash - Dispose when you are leaving class! No walking around during class.
  12. Tissues – will be on the side of the room.
  13. Sharpen pencils – before our class! Bring extra pens and pencils to class!

Homework

  1. Homework is assigned Monday through Friday.  You are expected to review your notes before the next class. (Review of notes is always part of the homework assignment
  2. Completed assignments should be left on your desk at the beginning of each class.  Leave a note from your parent or guardian if there is a special problem.  If you cannot find your homework at the beginning of the class your will not receive credit.
  3. To receive credit, all sections of the entire assignment must be attempted!
  4. If you are absent, you will be required to complete the work upon returning to school.
  5. Assignments must have a heading that includes your name, date and class period.
  6. Show all work and write in full sentences. Calculations can be done with pencil or pen.
  7. You are expected to do all homework. Missed homework will result in loss of points from your quarter average.
  8. Homework will be checked or collected at the teacher’s discretion.

Tests

  1. Tests and/or quizzes will be given nearly every week.
  2. Tests will be announced in advance to allow time for studying. We are available 9th period to answer any questions.
  3. There will be a review sheet for all tests!
  4. Missed tests or quizzes must be completed within one week of your return during 9th period. You must schedule the day for the makeup test or quiz with the teacher.

  1. Tests, quizzes, and class work                                       65%

Books and Supplies

  1. TextbookBrief Review in Chemistry, the Physical Setting
  2. Calculator—(You should have a scientific calculator.)
  3. 3 ring binder (at least 1.5”) with loose leaf paper
  4. Dividers (5 sections-notes, homework, labs, tests/quizzes, do now sheets)
